Music charts – 1978
30th December – I have a strong memory of many
tracks. Y.M.C.A. was number one,
2. Mary’s Boy Child by Boney M (#2) – I had a dream about knowing
Boney M as a child, after they’d been interviewd in Smash Hits. Somehow I came
to believe they were Russian.
There are song I flat out can’t remember for whatever
reason: Tommy Gun by the Clash, Breaking Glass by Bowie, for example. I guess
they didn’t get played so much on bland Radio 1 or local Plymouth Sound. Some artists
like Racey, ONJohn, Darts, hot chocolate – their stuff just seems to blend
together into one amorphous indigestible lump.
4. But I used to think the Barron Knights were funny, and
I don’t now. But my first single in reality was a Barron Knights single which I
rule out of the official listings due to the fact that it was a childish
purchase by a child. This one contained spoofs of Boney M, The Smurfs, the
matchstick men and dogs single,
6. HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK was a song my Dad took on
board to do impromptu perfornces all over the place. At the time I considered
it to be a novelty song.
9. I LOST MY HEART TO A STARSHIP TROOPER - SARAH BRIGHTMAN
AND HOT GOSSIP which I find unlistenable – had to endure it too many times.
10. Le Freak by Chic – I found it boring but love it now.
11. Da “Ya” Think I’m Sexy? – another novelty song.
13. Greased Lightnin’ – Travolta
14. Shooting Star – Dollar
22. Hanging on the Telephone – Blondie
All those Grease tracks…
50s revivals had been big for a while – I guess our
parents were having a nostalgic moment and it was new to those of us born in
the 60s, or even the tail end of the 50s.

Simon Bates was the presenter on Radio One and it had
rebooted as a top 4- show on 12th of November – which means I wasn’t
listenining to it any earlier than that.
Tony Blackburn took over on 2nd September 1979
and Tommy Vance on 10th January 1982
